SEO vs Google Ads for a local service business

One gets the phone ringing this month. The other gets cheaper if you give it time. You probably don't have to marry either.

You'll hear two speeches. Your cousin: just run Google Ads, skip the wait. The other guy at the braai: SEO is free traffic, ads are a waste. Both are half right, which is why they're annoying.

You're not trying to 'win the internet'. You want to show up when someone nearby types the job you actually do, then make it easy to enquire. SEO and Google Ads can both do that. Different clocks. Different bills.

What you're actually buying

SEO (the local kind)

It's the work that helps Google trust you for searches like 'electrician Durbanville' or 'dentist Bellville'. For a local business that usually means a useful website, a complete Google Business Profile, reviews, and pages that match what people type. It does not mean a pile of blog posts nobody asked for.

You don't pay Google per click. You pay for the work, or you do it yourself. It's slow at first. Then visits and calls can keep arriving without a click fee. Neglect the profile, the site, or the reviews and it fades. Not overnight. Fast enough that you'll notice.

Google Ads

You bid to sit at the top of Google for searches you choose. Someone clicks, you pay. You stop paying, you vanish. Sounds rude. It's also the honest tool when you need the phone to ring *this month*, not after winter.

Ad spend goes to Google. If someone runs the account for you, that's a separate fee. You can DIY. DIY is also how a lot of budgets disappear on the wrong words, the wrong area, or a homepage that never mentions the service.

When ads should go first

  • The diary is quiet *this month* and rankings can wait.
  • You launched a new service or moved into a new suburb.
  • Competitors already own the free results and you need a way in while you catch up.
  • You can name the job clearly. One offer, one area. Vague ads burn money.
  • Your site already makes it obvious how to call or message. Ads to a dead homepage is lighting rand on fire.

We charge R3 490 once-off if we set up one campaign and hand it over, or R2 690 to R4 490 a month if we run it. Ad spend is extra and paid to Google. See Google Ads.

When SEO is the better long game

  • People already search for your service in your area, every week, without you advertising.
  • You're tired of renting every click and want a base that isn't switched off on day 31.
  • Your Google Business Profile is half empty, or a competitor with worse reviews still sits above you.
  • You can give it a quarter. Local SEO is not a weekend project, no matter what the Facebook ad promised.

Our SEO plans start at R2 490 a month for one city or suburb, with a 3-month minimum. We don't promise first place. Nobody honest does. You get work you can see: the profile, the pages, and a monthly summary in English. Details on SEO.

The combo most local businesses end up with

Ads buy time. SEO can get cheaper later, if the work is real. A sequence we use a lot:

  1. Fix the site so a visitor can enquire without hunting. No ad and no ranking saves a confusing page.
  2. Turn on a tight Search campaign for your main service and area while you're still invisible for free.
  3. Build local SEO at the same time: Google Business Profile, reviews, service pages, and only the content that matches real searches.
  4. Turn the ad budget down later if you start showing up on the map and in the free results. Keep ads for the gaps: a new service, a busy season, searches SEO still doesn't win.
Enough of the right enquiries, at a cost you can live with. That's the whole game.

A five-minute test on your phone

Search your own service and suburb, on your phone, like a customer would. If you're invisible and you need work now, ads. If you already appear but the listing is thin, the site is weak, or the reviews are behind, the profile and SEO will probably pay off longer. If you still can't tell, that's a short conversation, not a 40-page deck.

Quick answers

Is SEO cheaper than Google Ads?

The monthly SEO fee can look cheaper because you're not paying per click. Ads can be cheaper per new customer in month one because they're faster. Over a quiet month, ads usually win. Over a year, decent local SEO often brings the cost per enquiry down.

Can I skip the website and just do SEO?

Your Google Business Profile does a lot locally. People still click through. A weak site leaks the enquiry. Fix the site first, then pick the channel.

What about Facebook and Instagram ads?

Those can work when you need to show an offer to people who weren't searching. Different job. We unpacked that in Google Ads vs Facebook Ads. If someone is already typing what you do into Google, Search ads and SEO meet them there.

Not sure where to start?

Tell us the suburb, the service, and whether you need work this month or can wait a bit. We'll say which lever to pull first, even if that isn't with us.
